- How To Farm Legendary Shards Quickly
Legendary Shards are one of Destiny 2's main forms of currency. Obtained from dismantling Legendary and Exotic-rarity gear, Legendary Shards are needed to do virtually anything. They're commonly used to purchase Upgrade Modules, Masterwork materials, and obtain certain items such as Trials Passages.
No matter how often you interact with Destiny 2, you will need a stockpile of Legendary Shards to have a smooth experience. Fortunately, there are quite a few ways of obtaining Legendary Shards—most of which aren't tied to farming any activities. Whether you're new or a long-time veteran, these are the best ways of obtaining Legendary Shards in Destiny 2.
Updated May 28th, 2022, by Charles Burgar: With Bungie's recent focus on reworking core activities to include Engram focusing, Legendary Shards are becoming more important than ever. If you're looking to target farm Iron Banner gear this season, you'll want as many Shards as you can. Fortunately, this season's Nightmare Containment activity is a great place for farming Legendary Shards. We've updated this guide to include Nightmare Containment in our Legendary Shard farming recommendations section, and we've made some slight fixes to other sections of this guide.
Clean Out Your Vault
By far the fastest way of earning Legendary Shards for veteran players is to clean out your Vault. Most players stockpile weapons and armor as they play Destiny 2 in hopes of using them in the future. This rarely happens, causing some players to have Vaults that are almost full.
Every weapon and armor piece you dismantle is worth three Legendary Shards, four if you have the paid Season Pass and are a high enough level. Dismantling 300 weapons and armor pieces from your Vault would yield 900 Legendary Shards—1,200 if you own the current season. Considering how frequently Destiny 2 hands out Legendaries, most players can do this once or twice a season to obtain a stockpile of Legendary Shards.
Vault Cleaning Tips
- If you have multiple versions of a weapon, try to keep one.
- Dismantle any sunset gear you have—items that cannot be infused past 1,350.
- Items with strong sentimental value to you are the only exception.
- Use D2ArmorPicker or DIM to configure armor loadouts. Once you've made a few loadouts, delete the rest of your armor.
- Make an effort to reduce your Vault to a certain number. If you have 500 items, focus on dropping it to 400 or 300.

Redeem Vendor Packages
Tower vendors have reward tracks that unlock as you earn reputation with them. A universal reward from every vendor is a Legendary Engram, one given for each rank-up. These Engrams always grant a Legendary piece of gear which can be dismantled for 3-4 Legendary Shards.
As for ranking up vendors, you'll need to farm ritual playlists—Vanguard Ops, Crucible, and Gambit—and Gunsmith bounties. Stay within an activity playlist to build up a streak, increasing the reputation you earn. Beyond that, keep your eyes out for double reputation weeks for a given playlist. These aren't on any roadmap, so keep your eyes out for the "Next Week in Destiny" login prompts. Playlists will also display increased rep gains as a modifier if a double reputation week is active.

Umbral Engrams
Umbral Engrams drop from just about every activity in Destiny 2, having a slightly lower drop chance than typical Legendary Engrams. You can either decrypt these Engrams at Rahool for additional Legendary items, or you can focus them at the H.E.L.M. to earn specific weapons, high-stat armor, and more. If you're just looking for Legendary Shards, we recommend the former.

Season Pass Rewards
The premium track of the Season Pass always contains a Legendary Shard Dismantle Bonus at rank 20, causing all weapons and armor to grant an additional Legendary Shard when dismantled. In other words, Legendary gear grants four Legendary Shards. Exotic gear dismantles into six Legendary Shards.
In addition, the Season Pass also grants Legendary weapons and armor at certain Season Pass ranks. While it's advised to use these rewards to even out your Power Level as you're leveling, they can also be used as dismantling fodder.
Legendary Shards are also awarded in sets of 25 at certain Season Pass ranks. Those ranks are the following:
| Rank | Track | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Rank 5 | Free | x25 |
| Rank 10 | Free | x25 |
| Rank 14 | Paid | x25 |
| Rank 31 | Paid | x25 |
| Rank 44 | Paid | x50 |
| Rank 44 | Paid | x50 |

How To Farm Legendary Shards Quickly
There are four Legendary Shard farms we recommend:
- Farm Strikes.
- Farm Crucible.
- Farm Dares of Eternity.
- Farm Nightmare Containment.
The mode you farm is up to you, but all four options have solid reward structures. Pick the mode that sounds the most fun to you, and feel free to mix it up.
Legendary Shard Farm: Strikes
Boot up the Vanguard Ops playlist and play as much PvE as you can. Successive matches will build up a Vanguard Rank streak, granting additional reputation until you play another activity. This means you'll be earning Engrams from Zavala at a faster rate. If you can handle the difficulty spike, you can also farm Hero-tier Nightfalls to earn even more reputation, although Nightfalls take slightly longer to complete.
Regardless of which playlist you farm, equip a Prosperity (Vanguard) Ghost Shell mod. You'll have a chance of earning another Legendary item that you can dismantle for more Shards, making this a great farm for casual players and hardcore PvE Guardians alike.
Legendary Shard Farm: Crucible
Queue for Control, Rumble, or the rotating playlist if it's short—Momentum Control and Mayhem are good picks. If you're good at PvP, we recommend Rumble. Stay in the Crucible playlists to build up your Play Streak, giving additional Crucible Rank with each game. And just like PvE, you can equip a Prosperity (Crucible) Ghost Shell mod to earn more Legendary Shards from Crucible wins.
Legendary Shard Farm: Dares Of Eternity
Dares of Eternity is a great source of Legendary Shards and some of Destiny 2's best weapons. You do not need the Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack to farm this activity. Xur has the same reward track as your typical ritual vendor, and you can build a Play Streak by playing Dares. The reputation grind for Dares is quite a bit slower than other ritual activities, yet the weapons you earn from Dares of Eternity make up for this.
Additionally, you'll be earning Treasure Keys as you complete your Dares runs. This allows you to open a chest at Xur's Treasure Hoard to earn even more Legendary gear. You don't have Prosperity Ghost Shell mods for this activity, but Treasure Keys more than make up for this. You should also consider purchasing Starhorse Bounties while you're in Xur's hub area, as some bounties give Paraversal Haul consumables as a reward, granting even more Legendary gear.
Legendary Shard Farm: Nightmare Containment
Nightmare Containment is a public event introduced in Season of the Haunted, free for all players. This activity throws you and other Guardians against an onslaught of Scorn enemies. Completing this event will spawn a chest that typically grants a Legendary item and the chance of an Opulent Key. You can open a second chest with currency earned from this activity, and an additional hidden chest spawns after each clear. That Opulent Key also unlocks yet another chest with a guaranteed Menagerie weapon.
If you get a key on your run, you can get four sources of loot in a single Nightmare Containment clear. Pair that with the enemies themselves dropping the occasional Engram, and you have yourself a great farm for Legendary Shards. Be sure to interact with the Crown of Sorrow at the H.E.L.M. to receive further rewards from playing this activity.
